About Assistance League of Southern California
Assistance League of Southern California (ALSC), a nonprofit 501©(3) corporation, founded in 1919, serves people with critical needs, from the youngest child to the frailest adult, through eight community-based services. In fiscal year 2005-2006, Assistance League impacted the lives of more than 200,000 individuals, offering hope and opportunity to those seeking help.
ALSC Services
Much needed day care for infants and toddlers and a school-readiness program, which is geared toward working parents of low-income families, is provided at Learning Center for Young Children. After-school and vacation care is offered at Children’s Club in a safe, nurturing environment. Live theatre productions twice a year are presented at Theatre for Children to young theatre-goers, half of whom are physically, mentally or economically disabled. Operation School Bell gives impoverished students a chance to feel like their classmates by outfitting them with uniforms, athletic clothes, grooming kits and backpacks at the center in Hollywood and on Operation School Bell on Wheels. Foster Children’s Resource Center clothes foster children with layette items and school clothes. At Hollywood Senior Multipurpose Center seniors receive congregate meals at seven nutrition sites, home delivered meals that enable them to remain healthy and independent, a wide array of recreational and educational programs, and adult day care for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Family Service Agency keeps families safe and strong through the Family Preservation Program, while individuals and families receive counseling aimed at preventing problems from becoming larger ones. Volunteer Center of Los Angeles connects people to organizations that benefit from their involvement and handles a court referral program.
ALSC’s 850-plus members are involved in all aspects of the organization, from planning and policy making to operating and staffing League services. Nearly two-thirds of League members belong to one or more of 10 auxiliaries, which raise funds and provide volunteer support.
Of the League’s eight community services, Foster Children’s Resource Center, Operation School Bell and Theatre for Children are staffed entirely by volunteers. Professional staff operate Children’s Club, Family Service Agency, Hollywood Senior Multipurpose Center, Learning Center for Young Children and Volunteer Center of Los Angeles-ALSC.
